Radio Controlled Clock
How A Radio Controlled Clock Works
A radio controlled clock, or atomic clock, is a clock that is synchronised by a time code bit stream transmitted by a radio transmitter connected to a time standard such as an atomic clock. Most of the radio controlled clocks on ClocksDepot receive a MSF signal from the transmitter based in Anthorne in Cumbria.
Analogue vs Digital
All analogue radio contolled clocks use a quartz movement with an additional radio receiver. The radio receiver is then used with a clever chip to move the clocks hands rapidly to the correct time. All this is done when the batteries are first inserted or every morning between 1am and 5am.
Digital radio controlled clocks use a similar receiver and chip but need no quartz movement only the original digital circuit board to have the time changed.
